JumboSwitch Supports Zero Down-time Recovery for Power Utility Teleprotection Applications
By sending Teleprotection frames in both directions around a network ring, the
JumboSwitch supports "hitless recovery" for teleprotection-over-Ethernet/IP applications in Power
Utilities.
This "Hitless Recovery" scheme is ideal for delay-sensitive applications because it duplicates teleprotection frames, in both fiber directions, from source to destination. In the event of a device or cable failure, the JumboSwitch's "zero down-time" hitless recovery option maintains normal communication without losing a single data bit.
Typical SONET/SDH standards call for 50 msec recovery and Ethernet Spanning Tree Protocol recoveries could take several seconds depending on the complexity of the network. If a need for teleprotection switching occurs while the network is in recovery mode, the teleprotection packets may be dropped. For extreme mission-critical teleprotection applications, even minuscule network outage time is unacceptable.
The JumboSwitch currently offers three low-latency interface cards specifically designed to meet stringent real time requirements for protective relay communications in the power utility industry.
